Picture3On Monday 14th December all Prep boys were introduced to Mathematics within Chess by Dr John Upham, Chess master and current leader of Chess club at St Edward’s.
Dr Upham gave the boys a history of how the game of Chess was invented and then gave them several interesting problems to solve that involved chess but required Maths and problem solving to solve. Boys pondered over questions such as ‘How many squares are there on a chess board?’ (and it isn’t 64!); ‘How is Pythagoras’ theory different in the triangles on a chess board?’ and even how the score of each chess piece can be calculated using algebra. It certainly made the boys think and realise how much Mathematics is involved in the game of Chess.
