Maths outside, phonics inside!

This week the Reception boys have been exploring what numbers mean. So knowing that 6 is not just the numeral, and amount, but also practically working out different ways to make 6.
In the garden the boys explored different ways to make 6 by seeing where their 6 beanbags landed. How many landed IN the pot and how many landed OUT. Lots of “5 and 1 make 6”, and “3 and 3 make 6”, were exclaimed from the boys as they worked out their sums.
Later in the day, they put their phonics skills to practice when reading words on the cards, spotting different letter sounds, finding initial sounds and we even looked at how many syllables were in the words and their names.
We also found a basket of Dinosaur bones! But that adventure will need to be for another day.
