Pirates Ahoy!
Captain Swift, First Mate Arnold and all the Year 1 crew are learning about pirates for their humanities topic this term.
We have imagined being pirates and written about: why we became pirates, what it would be like to be marooned on a desert island. We have learned facts about pirates and sorted fact from fiction. We wrote our own non-fiction pirate books – come and visit Year 1 to read them. We have learnt about famous pirates and the different jobs on pirate ships. In art we have created wonderful collages of pirate ships on the sea. We have made treasure chests bursting with gold and jewels beyond your imagination. And we have created pirate faces.
By making our geography and history topic exciting and interesting to the boys we aim to involve them fully and capture their imagination. When they are absorbed and excited by a topic they are more willing to engage, talk and write, thus developing their curiosity and imagination. They apply themselves and work with more independence.
‘I’ve learnt a lot of pirate facts.’ – Oliver
‘I learnt that Blackbeard put fuses in his beard that went bang to scare the enemy!’ – Jamie
‘I’ve really enjoyed making a non-fiction pirate book.’ – Rayen
‘We loved painting and decorating our treasure chests!’ – Atharva and Thomas
Next half term the topic takes a geographical turn, the boys will participate in map work looking at the physical features on a map and then create their own map symbols and treasure maps.
